Difference between Pairs and Ice Dance

After watching the pairs finals last night I've had three different people ask me what the difference is between Ice Dancing and Pairs.  Not that I am in any way an expert, but here goes my explanation.  What you saw last night was Pairs.  There are more throws and theoretically it is more athletic, with more jumps, lifts etc.  Ice Dancing was derived from Ballroom dancing, so again theoretically it's supposed to look like Ballroom dancing on ice.  I think the confusion comes in because as everyone gets more athletic, it becomes harder for the novice spectator to tell the difference.  Hope that helps!
